My first official week without a gym went fairly well. Being injured, I refrained from walking any more that 5-10 min to and from the bus (despite the really unseasonably nice weather we had this week) and just stuck to weights and yoga in my room.I had gotten a couple yoga dvds from the library last weekend in preparation and surprising didn't hate them. One was Shiva Rea's Flow Yoga for beginners, which was about 70 min and unlike her Yoga Shakti DVD had poses I could actually do, while not just having me sit on my butt and meditate for an hour like some beginner ones. The 2nd DVD was Gaiams Yoga for Flexibility, which was also good. It was also a b it different in that there weren't tons of sun salutations, which are good but can get boring. The only problem with this DVD was the backbend and forward bend sequences. The forward bend just because it was a lengthy amount of time and aggravated my hip just a bit (I'm really inflexible on my right side!), the backbends because - again not flexible - or used to backbends and very afraid of injuring my lower back, which is already touchy from the hip injuries. I think being very careful with it, they are good for me, but very very carefully....
My takeaway from these dvds - 1) I need a better yoga mat, I keep slipping in downward dog and falling on my face. 2) I need some blocks to be able to do some of these (basic) poses...
I tried to do yoga in the mornings before work and then some weights after work. Not every day because I can only do upper body and you should rest a day in between. My upper body workout looked like this:
5 min marching in place warmup
3 sets pushups - 20,12,12
4 sets Chest Press (22 lbs each arm)
4 sets Dumbbell Flye (12.5 lbs each arm)
4 sets Skullcrushers (12.5 lbs each arm)
4 sets bicep curls (12.5 lbs each arm)
3 sets shoulder press (15 lbs each arm)
3 sets side raises (5 lbs each arm)
5 min stretching
My biggest annoyance since leaving the gym, oddly enough is my bus schedule. I guess after so many years I had finally gotten a routine and now I'm trying to find a new one. There is no reason to be in work by 7 if I can't leave @ 3:30 because there's no bus till 4. But when I take the next bus in the morning which is supposed to arrive at work at 7:30, its been 10-15 minutes late everytime, which screws up me catching the 4:00 bus! aaahhh. I did complain. I'm usually pretty passive aggressive but this is transportation to WORK, people need it on time. It isn't like in NY where the buses run ever 10 minutes and go everywhere, I don't have any other options here, nor do other people on the bus, some of whom need to catch a transfer to other buses.... its just not right.
